Kelly, the blind kitten and the Swedish anomaly

Posted on July 23, 2021November 25, 2024 By CanisTrigger No Comments on Kelly, the blind kitten and the Swedish anomaly

Kelly, the blind kitten, will be killed by Swedish authorities who believe blind cats do not have the right to live. Spread the word: SAVE KELLY!

Sweden is like China when it comes to the treatment of animals, whether they are domestic pets, farm animals, or even the wildlife. The only difference could be found in the absurd number of organisations created with the sole purpose of making the act of killing more acceptable to the dumb, narcotised part of the population.

Here you can find (among others):
– The Swedish Centre for Animal Welfare, SCAW (Nationellt centrum för djurvälfärd, SCAW)
– The Swedish Board of Agriculture (Jordbruksverket)
– The Swedish Veterinary Institute, SVA (Statens veterinärmedicinska anstalt, SVA)
– The county administrative boards (Länsstyrelserna), also known as the state’s regional representatives.

This jumbled mishmash of organisations is exactly the opposite of what is needed in a country with the most obsolete and unethical Animal Welfare Act which does not contribute in any shape of form to the introduction of Animal Rights, something lacking as much in Sweden as it does in China. Unfortunately, this vicious circle includes also some unscrupulous members of the veterinary profession whose proficiency and motives are often debatable, to say the least.
Particularly, Länsstyrelserna are an aberration since the day in 2009 when they were given absolute power to perform what they refer to as “animal welfare inspections”, previously done by each individual municipality in the country.

These county administrative boards were not created to protect animals but to exploit and eventually kill them for profit. They also enlists incompetent personnel (their so-called inspectors –  all dressed in black –  are reminiscent of the infamous Blackshirts or Camicie Nere, the militia active under Fascist rule in Italy), for the most part members of the general public with no education who could not professionally evaluate the state and wellbeing of an animal. In fact, in the past some of these individuals have also been exposed as animal abusers themselves.

The case of the blind kitten Kelly is only one example of how incompetence, utter ignorance, and cruelty are used to evaluate the mental state of a blind young pet without the slightest knowledge or experience of handling animals with special needs or dealing with their behaviour; in Sweden disabled pets are regularly killed regardless of the fact that living with a disability is a normal factor occurring in both human and non-human animals.
Incidentally, this is a peculiar Swedish way of thinking which also affects the human population (the elderly members of society constitute a burden, therefore are often “sacrificed” in the name of an array of twisted beliefs and practices that have their roots in eugenics, as we have witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic).Kelly’s story should be told extensively as it is very typical of the ignorant stubbornness the various organisations manifest on a regular basis whereas common sense and specific knowledge should be used instead.

“The kitten Kelly was found about 7 weeks old in someone’s garden (in Skåne) with eyes in a terrible condition (grotesquely swollen due to an infection) but in good condition generally. The one who found Kelly got in touch with the cat rescue, Kattkommando Syd, that picked up the kitten and provided her with vet care.
The fundraising entity Insamlingsstiftelsen Kattjouren agreed to fund all vet care costs associated with Kelly’s recovery.”

Kelly’s surgery to remove her eyes is successful and she is now just a happy kitten in recovery. Enter the usual member of the (Swedish) public – the one who cowardly acts anonymously in order to feel superior – who promptly makes a call to the authorities because she cannot understand what goes on with Kelly, having been brought up despising anything that is different and unique, so she pontificates that the kitten is not well. This woman’s stupidity is so monumental she should be jailed as it is truly against nature to tolerate an idiot like her in a civilised society. But I am digressing…
Länsstyrelsen  jumps in, and with its usual arrogance and disregard for anything that lives and breathes, it initiates the customary procedure. They do not see or evaluate Kelly (though notoriously they are too incompetent to do that anyway), but decide to ask for an opinion their sister organisation, the Swedish Centre for Animal Welfare, SCAW. The two alleged veterinarians approached by the County Board also do not have a direct encounter with the kitten, but concoct a rather absurd and distorted statement containing a number of inaccuracies and made-up assumptions that would make anyone cringe. Clearly, these two have never even seen a live cat in their lives, let alone a blind one. And I personally doubt we are dealing with proper veterinarians; most likely these two are amateurs who have veterinary science as a weekend hobby. Among the utter nonsense spewed by the Laurel and Hardy of SCAW, there is as follows:

1 Even though some blind cats can do well, that is rather the case with cats that become blind as adults in an environment and with people they know well.
2 Kittens, on the other hand, have poor quality of life and will be exposed to mental suffering as blind, especially if they need to move to a new environment.
3 Such a kitten will not be able to perform natural behaviours such as hunting, playing, climbing.
4 She will be exposed to stress and fear because she will not be able to observe her surroundings, especially since she will not be able to hide (?).
5 She will also have difficulty communicating with and connecting with other animals or humans.

I seriously question the respective IQs of such individuals.
The first point is an idiocy plain and simple. They are not cat behaviourists so how many blind cats have they observed in their entire life? Not a single one. This evaluation is shallow and unsubstantiated, hence absolutely worthless.
Number two: Kelly has an adopter already lined up. These two geniuses need to be informed that cats can adapt to any environment quite quickly, especially one which is safe and custom-made to fit their needs (because cats should be kept indoors and as far away as possible from the dangers of the outside world, whether they are blind or not) which will become familiar almost instantly, if not sooner.
Three: She is already showing her “natural behaviour”; dumb and dumber would have known it, had they bothered checking out the videos of Kelly playing and jumping happily while in care.
And four: This is the most far-fetched, stupid one of their points. Seriously, do these two believe that a blind child, for instance, could not communicate and bond with her own mother or with other children? How does lacking one of the senses make one unable to use any of the others? Are these two pathetic individuals projecting their own inadequacy and inability to face disabilities in general on to this blind kitten? Because all over the world there are families that have adopted and raised blind cats which are happily living and interacting with other cats, dogs and humans of all ages, and we are not imagining it. Have these two wannabe experts been living in an alternate reality?

It is also important to understand that Länsstyrelsen would exclusively seek out an opinion that supports their decision. They will never take into consideration anything which would prove them wrong, no matter what the level of expertise of those making the evaluation might be. They want to be right at all costs as the life of the animals is the least of their concerns: the main focus is always on profit and on the power that comes with it.
The two County Administrative Boards involved in Kelly’s ordeal showed incompetence as well as a drive to retaliate against those who exposed their mishandling of procedures in previous cases, and last but not least, a morbid desire to cause suffering to a defenceless animal, something corroborated by the fact Kelly was seized while in recovery and shoved into a cage in something equivalent to a ‘pound.’
Both Skåne and Kalmar County Administrative Boards should be reported themselves for their cruel actions (actions that might also culminate in the killing of this sweet blind kitten, although we hope and pray for a positive outcome). But in Sweden, who do you report these criminals to? Remember, this is a vicious circle where every single one of the organisations aforementioned, as well as the courts handing down the judgement, are all part of a unit within a consolidated system. They never disagree with each other; they never accept any evidence going against their initial intentions (which are always to charge their fees before killing the animals); they systematically go unpunished, counting on the help of ignorant fools like the woman who reported Kelly’s case to them (and there are fools aplenty in this country, unfortunately for the animals).

The Swedish Animal Welfare Act does not recognise animals as sentient beings but considers them mere property. Sweden is a Member State of the European Union, and we know that Article 13 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union “recognises animals as sentient beings and requires full regard be given to the welfare requirements of animals while formulating and enforcing some EU policies.” Welfare without the recognition of rights is only going to reinforce the various interpretations of what is supposed to be good or not for an animal.
Ultimately, not being considered sentient and having no fundamental right to exist, animals are left at the mercy of the uneducated members of those organisations (which act for profit) who will have their own say without any corroborating facts or direct knowledge.
Most likely, in their daily life these people do not respect or protect animals but contribute actively to their abuse and exploitation (by eating them, wearing their skin, buying products tested on them, etc.).They are unfit to express an opinion concerning the welfare of these creatures because what defines animals as sentient beings is missing from their aberrant Animal Welfare Act (which is a directory of how to kill them better).
We would not accept slavery in our modern societies, regardless whether the slaves are guaranteed food and accommodation (welfare); because every human being has a fundamental right to be free, the concept of slavery is vile and unacceptable. Without those essential rights, the sole notion of welfare would generate a monster!

It is our duty to inform about the way animals are treated here as the misconception about Sweden being an animal friendly country has fooled many (including yours truly). Not to be able to rescue disabled pets or being targeted for having elderly ones is something that needs to change. But how? The road is long and hard because children are not taught about ethics and the value and importance of life, so they grow up to become like the miserable and pathetic woman who called Länsstyrelsen about Kelly.
Plato said that ignorance is the root of all evil: nothing could me more fitting when discussing Sweden and the treatment of animals (and sometimes humans too). The farmer’s mentality still holds; animals are a commodity and nothing else. Companion animals are great until they are young and beautiful; then, they are disposed of like garbage. The quality of life, the dignity, they say… We know well what the pursuit of perfection has given rise to in the past.

We need to save Kelly in order to break the deadly cycle; we need to tell her story to the world, pushing Länsstyrelserna and their cohorts to face up to responsibility for once.
In the long run, Länstyrelserna should be dismantled for good and replaced by organisations specialising in helping animals with disabilities. Now, that is what this country truly needs. It needs to evolve into a compassionate place, and knowledge is the only possible way to do it. Please spread the word. #SaveKelly
